Comparison of advantages and disadvantages of cold forging and hot forging

Publish Time: 2023-03-27     Origin: Site

Hot forging:a forging process in which the metal material is heated to a state above the recrystallization temperature and below the solidus line for pressure processing.

Recrystallization temperature: Rough calculation can take 0.4 times the melting point of the metal as the recrystallization temperature.

jiahangaero said that for forged products, the cold forging process can obtain better flatness, and the hot forging process has the worst flatness, while the flatness of warm forging (the temperature of the metal material is between cold forging and hot forging) is medium.

Advantages and disadvantages of hot forging:

  • Advantages:

If the temperature of the forging material is still much higher than the recrystallization temperature after processing is completed, the grains will have a longer time to grow, and coarser grains will be obtained, which can increase the fracture toughness (lower crack growth rate).

  • Shortcoming:

(1)Due to the high temperature operation, the danger to personnel safety and material safety is high.

(2)The material is prone to oxidation at high temperature, resulting in scale, resulting in fouling on the surface, and poor smoothness and flatness.

(3)After the hot forging is completed, the forging material will shrink during the cooling process, which will affect the dimensional accuracy of the forging.

(4)The equipment and maintenance costs required for high-temperature operations are relatively high.

Advantages and disadvantages of cold forging:

Advantage:

(1) The forging material is not easy to produce scale, and the surface finish is better.

(2) The precision of the size of the forging is better.

(3) Work hardening (strain hardening) occurs during processing, which can increase strength and hardness.

(4) The metal fiber flow direction of the forging can be obtained in a specific direction.

(5) No heat treatment is required to minimize the pollution problem.

(6) There is no need for heating costs, reducing production costs.

Shortcoming:

(1) The plasticity and toughness of forging materials are reduced, which is unfavorable for subsequent processing.

(2) The deformation force required is greater than that of hot forging.

(3) Residual stress will be generated inside the material.

(4) Metal grains will be deformed or broken.

(5) The directionality during processing may be unfavorable for future product use
